JAN:

  • Check for and control winter weeds.

  • Check crape myrtle trees for bark scale. If found spray with dormant oil containing paraffin wax.

  • Clean leaves before daffodils emerge.

 

FEB:

  • Cut all ornamental grasses back to 8” to 12” above the ground. Late in month is best.

  • If required, prune crape myrtles. Prune knockout and drift roses. Prune as needed all shrubs and trees that bloom on new wood and have not already formed flower buds.

  • Apply fertilizer to winter annuals to increase flower bloom.

  • Trim off liriope.

 

MAR:

  • Check for and control grass and weeds.

  • Apply Preen on plant beds to take care of existing weed seeds

  • Prune as required boxwoods, hollies and other non blooming evergreen plants. Blooming evergreens like Azaleas, Camellias and Loropetalum prune after they are done blooming. Also feed the Azaleas and Camellias with a slow release acid forming fertilizer 11-5-5.

 

APR:

  • Check for and control weeds.

  • April and May are good months to replace plants that have been damaged or have failed.

  • Prune as required and fertilize spring blooming trees and shrubs after they are done blooming.

  • Re mulch plant beds typically every two years.

 

MAY:

  • Check for and control weeds.

  • Remove winter annuals and replace with summer annuals. Apply bloom inducing slow release fertilizer on annuals.

  • Check for fire ants and control as required.

  • Prune as required and fertilize after late spring blooming shrubs and trees are done blooming.

  • Good time to replace plants that have been damaged or have failed.

  • Apply garden fertilizer such as 13-13-13 to plant beds.

  • Check for insects on all the trees and shrubs and identify what the problem and how to control it.

 

JUN:

  • Check for and control weeds.

  • Re-apply bloom inducing slow release fertilizer on annuals.

  • Check for foliar diseases such as powdery mildew on crapes and dogwoods. Control if found.

  • Treat plant beds for grubs if needed.

 

JULY:

  • Check and control weeds.

  • Give annuals and perennials a hair cut if necessary to promote better looking and fuller growth.

  • Re apply bloom inducing slow release fertilizer on annuals.
